Following the withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021 and the subsequent Taliban takeover, the Taliban has imposed several restrictions on women's rights to work, education, and freedom of movement. To support these women and not risk the previous decades of progress made in women's rights being lost, Wilstar is funding Women for Women's work in Afghanistan.

Background

Women for Women International (WfWI) was founded in 1993 and invests in the social and economic empowerment of marginalised women in countries affected by conflict. WfWI have incorporated charities in the US, set up in 1993, before they added a UK presence in 2006 and a German charity in 2018, allowing them to generate funding for female empowerment from Europe and the US. They have reached over 546.000 women in Afghanistan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Democratic Republic of Congo,Kosovo, Iraq, Nigeria, Rwanda, and South Sudan.

Achievements

In Afghanistan, they have:

·      Reached over 129.771 women since 2002

·     Conducted phone surveys and in-depth conversations to understand the       needs of the women and adapted their programme accordingly.

·      Served 3.310 women in 2022 by

- Offering their Stronger Women, Stronger Nations programme

- Providing $10 monthly stipends

- Providing an additional $50 cash grant to support increased needs following the Taliban takeover

- Providing small business start-up kits, aligning with the selected vocational tracks, including chickens and essential feeding supplies such as poultry start-up kits and tailoring kits that include sewing machines and supplies.

Wilstar Support

Wilstar's funds will support the StrongerWomen, Stronger Nations Programme. This 12-month training aims to build self-reliance concerning women's health and well-being, economic stability, family, community participation, and social safety nets. WfWI assumes that providing women training and combining it with a monthly stipend increases their financial security and improves their self-reliance. The women are taught seven training modules in classes of 25, including a focus on women's unity, women's work surrounding gender equality, women's rights, decision-making, and women's community involvement.
